Untouched solitude stretching to the horizon: sunset at Kivuko Eco Camp in the Taita Wildlife Conservancy
Kivuko Eco Camp is still a real insider tip! It's 400 km² are located in the private Taita Wildlife Conservancy, which is part of the vast Tsavo ecosystem. For holidaymakers from Mombasa and the south coast, it is the closest, fully-fledged destination for a savannah safari. The camp can be reached via a 15-kilometre-long dirt road that starts directly opposite the Buchuma Gate of Tsavo East National Park.
Some years ago, Southern Cross Safaris (which still operates Satao Camp in Tsavo East) had its spectacular Galla Camp at the top of the inselberg in the middle of the private reserve. Now, the next generation of wildlife enthusiasts among the local landowners has launched its own camp project.
At the foot of a huge rock, eight well-maintained safari tents and a good restaurant have been built in an absolutely quiet and starry bush savannah with great views of the surrounding mountain landscape. Camping is also possible in secluded places, and tents can be provided. If you are not arriving in your own car, the camp can organise game drives. Guided walks with rangers are also easily arranged.
Cattle farming continues in some separate peripheral areas – without this original source of income, wildlife tourism would not (yet) be financially viable here...
Kivuko is also a great and affordable base for day trips to the many attractions in the wider area: for climbing Mount Kasigau, for a day trip to neighbouring Tsavo
East or the Lake Jipe area in Tsavo West. From here, you can drive (through the ‘back door’, so to speak) to the Taita Hills and Lumo Sanctuaries, and
on to the Ngangao cloud forest high up in the Dabida Mountains.
Mbuyu Beach and Kivuko Eco Camp are kindred spirits – anyone who feels at home on our beach will surely have a good time there in the bush.
